Web / Press / Offsite Media Updates: April 25th - May 2nd

category international | miscellaneous | news report author Sunday May 02, 2004 19:28author by Indymedia Ireland Editorial Group - Indymedia Ireland

This weblog for Other Media contains information on updated websites, new issues of journals and newspapers, videos available on the net etc. A similar page will be published each week. Use the comments to add a new link with a summary.

Please add your information here. Include direct links if you have them, or details on where the print publication is available, if not.

This is not a normal newswire page and has different editorial rules. It will stay at the top of the wire no matter how many stories are published in the meantime. It is also designed as a pointer to other sites, so please do not (a) post full articles, or (b) add comments that don't consist of information on new content in the paper/website/whatever. This means that comments on who did what to whom, which party got more votes, what you think of a particular author or article, whose hamster was eaten by Freddie Starr , or anything else, will be hidden. If you are upset by an article linked to, you can add a comment or an (original and more-than-a-single-line) article as a standard newswire story. This is a page for links and updates only. The normal practice of hiding links to sites that are racist, discriminatory etc. will be followed.

The Guardian reports on Lord Carlisle's review of the use of the sweeping search-and-stop powers given to the British police by the Terrorism Act 2000 and the Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001.

Specific mention was made of the police interference with protestors against the UK's complicity in the Iraq war at the Fairford bomber refuelling base.

Slashdot (News for Nerds. Stuff that Matters) is reporting on the lightshow for Dublin that allows you to submit your own designs: http://www.dublinelevation.net/

Apparently not many designs are being submitted and those that are go live pretty quickly, so off ya go!

This interesting little interview was carried on several of the Public Radio International sister stations in the U.S.A. It consists of a conversation with two medics and is ostensibly about how their idealism in "liberating" Iraq has turned towards a belief that dictatorship might have been better for the Iraqis (according to at least one of the participants who states this outright).

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- A radio station that crank-called Cuban President Fidel Castro and broadcast the recording should be fined $4,000, the Federal Communications Commission said.

The Spanish-speaking hosts of "The Morning High Jinks" used snippets of an earlier prank involving Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to move the call from a receptionist up the chain to Castro in a five-minute broadcast June 17.

The hosts of the show on WXDJ-FM, Joe Ferrero and Enrique Santos, fed pleasantries to Castro before breaking in and calling him an assassin. The conversation ended after Castro denounced the callers with a stream of vulgarities.

Transcript and audio on DemocracyNOW!
Amy Goodman's program DemocracyNOW! carries a report on how an activist confronted the chairman and CEO of Coke at their annual shareholder's meeting in Delaware.
The activist (Ray Rogers) accused the Chairman/CEO (Douglas Daft) of lying at an earlier public meeting at Brandeis University. Rogers also points out the lawsuit against Coke was reinstated on the 26th of April and that Daft had lied about that.

The interview with Amy Goodman goes on to describe how Rogers (who was present as a proxy for 3000 shares and had the right to speak) was assaulted by Coca-Cola Company thugs.

Worth reading and listening to.

They call themselves Nationalists
http://www.20six.co.uk/IrelandsRight

is the website to what looks like the newest right wing commentary site in Ireland. Apparently they only have two or three authors as of now, but are actively recruiting more to post there. We are not currently sure what kind of threat they pose, but it's quite clear by their writing that they are right wing types who are our natural enemies.

Wanted everyone to be aware of these new ones, and keep up the good work everyone, May day is right around the corner! :)

Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy is reported in the Irish Independent as stoking the fires of fear. Falling back on the tried and true "outside agitators" hype he pulls the figure of "300" "troublemakers" out of someone's arse. He doesn't specify how reliable this intelligence is, he doesn't say exactly who told him.

Similarly "Security Editor" Tom Brady of The Irish Independent doesn't seem to be very keen on doing any journalistic fact-checking, preferring instead to be spoon fed by "official sources". Get off yer arse Tom and make like a journalist!

Who or what agency is behind these figures?
Do they have a history of reliability?
Why doesn't Tom Brady point out that the history of protests from Seattle to Genoa has mostly resulted in demonstrators being attacked, gaoled and otherwise abused by the people that are probably feeding him these figures?
Is it too much to expect Tom to sing for his supper?

succinctly reporting that the May 1st Grassroots Network protest is now happening at 6pm at the GPO coz the Gardai "security" arrangements were going to cause trouble.

Interesting little tidbit about Prodi saying that Germany and France are going to lose jobs to the new accession countries.

Today the list of dead US soldiers began to be published in US newspapers.
It counterpoints with the hoped for end of Micheal Jackson and the video of US soldiers running a torture session and rape room.
Bush paranoid wookie he,
has never attended a single funeral.
His office has attempted to completely ignore the bodybags.

USA Today the most read tabloid under a new editor, will be doing more to clean the wound with antiseptic and salt.

LONDON : Doubts arose over the authenticity of photos apparently showing British troops abusing an Iraqi detainee, after military sources quoted by the BBC said many aspects of the pictures were suspicious.

[....]

The rifle appears to be an SA80 mk 1, which was not issued to soldiers in Iraq, the BBC said.

Troops also wore berets or hard hats, not the floppy hats as seen in the pictures. The truck in the photo also appears to be a type never used in Iraq, the broadcaster said.

reports as do most media with Ireland in mind, that McDowell has won the Italian Open.

They're talking about "golf" expert Mc Dowell not the inept other Mc Dowell, who on the face of it could pick up an Italian Prize as well.
