Solidarity with Hunger Strikers in Turkey

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Monday April 05, 2004 11:13author by pat c

Vigil to mark the death of Umit Gungor, the 110th hunger striker to die
in the protest against isolation prisons in Turkey. Umit died in hospital
after setting himself on fire on March 29, TAYAD reported today.

The protest will take place at the Turkish Embassy, 11 Clyde Road, Ballsbridge,
Dublin on Wednesday 7th April from 6pm

Five people now remain on the Death Fast and further deaths are possible.
There was a gap of about a year between deaths, the last one had been Yusuf
Arici in March 2003. This was because in 2003 the state made more extensive
use of force-feeding than in the past. Many Death Fasters were left partly
or wholly handicapped as a result of this. Gungor was in the 9th Death Fast
Team but was subjected to force-feeding. He resumed the Death Fast but set
himself on fire when it was likely that the prison authorities would use
force-feeding again.

All welcome
