PROTEST ABOUT CHILDCARE
· Although the Dept of Ed & Science have allocated extra money to the VECs in Dec. 2003 for Childcare provision, the situatuion for 2004 still stands at the lower allocation i.e. 37 % down from 2002.
· This causes many students not to be able to take up places in Further Education. Youthreach & Traveller Training Centres, & causes others to drop out.
· It also puts huge pressure on creches which depend on the students to operate & have been set up for these students
· Some creches in CDVEC can still not open due to lack of funds
· It has taken many years of effort to get the childcare provision we have now, we cannot afford to let it slip away
· Cutting Childcare provision goes completely against the recommendations accepted by this government in the Lisbon protocol
· Minister Dempsey & the government are being completely two faced on this issue promising improvements in access to education & targeting disadvantage on one hand & cutting away viciously at the provision that does exist on the other.
