Trinity Anarchist Society Meeting to build for Shannon demonstration on December 6th. Involving a member of the Catholic Workers, indymedia & Grassroots Network Against War.
According to the minister of transport 81,790 US troops passed through Shannon airport on their way to Iraq in the first 9 months of this year . The so-called end of the war has not affected this traffic much. 9,876 troops passed through in September. Shannon airport is still playing a key role in the US war machine.
As this traffic of troops and arms has become part of public knowledge, so has the opposition to it. Protestors have been involved in sabotage against warplanes, mass tresspasses of the airfield and many demonstrations at Shannon. This meeting will bring together people who have been involved in the various resistance movements against the war and is part of the build up for the December 6th blockade of Shannon Airport.
- The Saboteur: Deirdre Clancy, a member of the Catholic Worker 5, currently awaiting trial for the non-violent disarming of a US warplane in January 2003
- The Tresspasser: Chekov Feeney - In October 2002 members of the Grassroots Network Against War tore down the perimeter fence around Shannon airport and engaged in a sit-down mass tresspass of the airfield. They were prosecuted for this and were served with extraordinarily harsh sentences, including fines of up to 3000 euros, banning orders from County Clare and were bound to keep the peace for up to 2 years.
- The film-maker: Aoibheann from Indymedia. All of the Shannon protests were filmed by indymedia videographers. We will be showing two short (10 minutes) videos of some of the most dramatic footage.
- The Agitator: Killian Patten, one of the Organisers of the Grassroots Mobilisation for the blockades in Shannon on December 6th will be discussing the plans for this next round of direct action.

Trinners is in a time warp so such things are not considered important 'round here.
As one of those involved in the action on 12th October 2002, I'd like to point out that it was NOT a GNAW action, contrary to what is stated in the blurb for Chekov. Was GNAW even in existence in October 2002?
I really don't mean to be awkward, but I don't think it's right to appropriate things in this fashion. I respect GNAW and the Grassroots, but let's not rewrite history. The October 2002 mass trespass was instigated by members of the Cork Peace Alliance in conjunction with others including WSM members. It was not a GNAW action.
Sorry Fintan, you are right. GNAW was not even formed then. Sorry, wasn't thinking too clearly when I wrote the blurb. Didn't mean to appropriate anything. My bad.
I have noticed that the SWP/Dublin IAWM have not put up a single poster about the Shannon blockade in Dublin. Meanwhile every lampost in the city has an ad for marxism on it.
However, in the last two days, I have seen one event building for Shannon organised by the SWP advertised. The meeting is on in Trinity, exactly one hour before the meeting above which had been advertised for a full week in college before the SWP posters appeared. Is this coincidence?
Invented a (short lived) local IAWM group to have a meeting clashing with a GNAW one.
