Passengers will be able to travel for free on all CIE routes on Friday, July 18th.
Breaking news from Unison site.
One of the brightest ideas coming from a trade union I've seen in a long time. A clever way to put their point accross too(whether you agree with their point or not). Does exactly what it says on the tin....

Passengers will be able to travel for free on all CIE routes on Friday, July 18th. It's part of a campaign of action drawn up by unions at CIE to protest at Government plans to break-up the company and privatise some Dublin Bus routes. A national day of protest will be held in mid-August, with one-day stoppages scheduled for later in the Autumn. Liam Tobin of the National Bus and Rail Workers Union said today that the No-Fares Day in July was "a chance for people to hear our side of the story".

have included mass boarding of trains.
mass boarding of buses.
and holding the exit doors open at railway/metro stations.
also cleverly faked London Underground tickets were available for years till the year change ended that freebie.
so.... this is not "CIE"'s idea.
they are merely recycling the ideas of others' as usual.
Theres no sucht hing as a free lunch.
Or should I say Thing.
McDermott ya dork, nobody ever claimed it was CIE's idea .......
In fact if you bothered to cast your manky eye over the article you would have seen that it is being organised by the trade union (supposedly representing the workers) .... not by "CIE" ....
The idea may not be original but that's no reason for dumping on ít ..... ya dopey citeog .....
All motor vehicles should be banned completely. Anyone who rides on a bus, train, even an ambulance, private car or aeroplane is just feeding the oil companies and slave-drivers of this world. Not only that but you are destroying the air we breathe and further our water which is polluted by the polluted rain from the polluted air so that we have to buy bottled water from nestle or other corporations. You people who have ever used a motor vehicle are as bad as Mr. Cuffe so don't be dissing him - at least he's making money out of destroying the world while you just destroy the world and then moan about being poor.
As for CIE, sack anyone involved with the company - anyone who thinks this service is worth saving has never used it.
cycling is easier though isn't it?
but sure there all righthanded the bikes.
...plan that summer trip out of the big smoke... train down and hitch back!
Oil is used on bikes isn't it? And the poor rubber trees are mutilated to make the tyres. And the velos are made of metal in factories - so using up ore resources, energy, and more oil, etc. in manufacturing them.
Can't ride horses, llamas, camels, etc. 'cos that is cruel to the animal community.
Just have to reply on the little feets with the consequent problems of mobility limited to a 10 mile radius, shopping difficulties and inbreeding.
Oh well, life sucks.
Just thought of one. Skis!! Slight problem of there only being about 2 days per year when they could be used. But still...
and further if there were no motor vehicles we wouldn't have those nice smooth roads and we'd have to cycle through forests with luddites crawling around looking for berries.
Yeah things could be worse - like being dependent on cie to get around and sow the oats. cruelty aside if we let llamas, donkeys zebras horses roam free with carts attached to them they would provide a more efficient service than cie does.
I hate environmentalist Feckin' hippies!! :@
