Survived Palestine but not O'connell street

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday June 09, 2003 12:41author by kino

"Peace campaigner Caoimhe Butterly, who survived being blockaded in Yasser Arafat's compound, tells how she was robbed in O'Connell St" - RTE's spin on the story.

Caoimhe says benefit gigs and fundraisers on the way to try to raise the cash again.

I'm sure posting this will create a forum for caoimhe bashers to condemn her for letting down the bag for a second like rte tried to do. Let's try to be a little more creative.

It's sounds a little like as if she got targeted. Anybody have any info?

Let's see if she doesn't raise more money out of all of this.

Shocking to hear about this and very bad misfortune.

I heard her being interviewed on Morning Ireland this morning just before the 9 o clock news.

She was standing at a bus stop heading to the airport. With one very heavy bag around her shoulder she put the bag with the money on the ground for a few secs and before she knew it, it was gone.

Besides some of the money being aid raised for Iraq, a lot of it was money from Iraqi exiles being sent back to their families in Iraq. The country is in such a complete state of collapse at the moment, it is the only way of transferring money there.

She has put back her trip by 2 weeks I think so as to try and raise the amount stolen. She will try and retrieve the money from the thief, but obviously a slim chance of this.

But as "kino" said, "Let's see if she doesn't raise more money out of all of this."

Hopefully she might publicise a verifyable account number to which money can be donated to. Would be good to get a good email with an account number going around.

Some of the papers might help out to get this publicised as well.

This is such a worthwhile and media friendly case, she should be able to raise a lot from it.

Here's hoping.

Why should we waste our time raising money for food for the people of Iraq? It is up to the people of Iraq with support from people in the west to rise up agaisnt US imperialism so they can bring a lasting end to domination and hunger. By sending charity and getting caught up with raising money we are confusing consciouness and are deflecting our attention from where it should be going ie the overthrow of imperialist butchers of Bush and Blair and their lackies such as Ahern, FF/PD , FG, Labour etc.

And i don't think our political agenda should get in the way of feeding the innocent people who the world have forgotten. Besides, they can't rise up on an empty stomach

Yes we should come to the Iraqi people aid immediately. We should also help them to become self-sufficent.

Way before you wre born, before the dawn of the Celtic tiger..... The Irish diaspora in the U.S., Australia, et.al. (where one was regulary slam dunked for being Irish) were sending all sorts of stuff back....just as the Iraqi diaspora based in Dublin are doing now. Wake up dude smell the coffee, rise above the historic amnesia you seem to be suffering from......they're here because we were there! And Caoimhe, Kathy and folks take great risks in making the connection.

Ciaran are you not involved in one of the largest charity organisations the catholic church? The fact is that the RC church has been using 'aid' and charity as a cover to push their backward papist ideas and regressive social teachings upon the oppressed peoples of the world.

Catholic Worker gets no funding or official recognition form the Catholic Church. Donations to the Catolic Worker in the U.S. are not tax deductable, we are not registered as a non-profit charity.

There are moves to canonise our founder, which many of us oppose.
When alive Dorothy Day said
"Don't call me a saint, I don't want to be dismissed that easily.

Caoimhe went from high to school to work in the Catholic Worker soup kitchen in NYC founded in 1933. CW has been one of many parts of her formation.

did this moron think it wise to carry several thousand euros in cash on her person, without some kind of aide....why the fuck was it not transferred into bonds/some kind of travellers's cheques that would have made a mugging irrelavant? except of course for the photo ops, and an upsurge in publicity for the martyr involved...
