REPUBLICAN NETWORK FOR UNITY (RNU) Belfast Chairperson, Martin Óg Meehan has highlighted an upsurge of sectarian clashes in North Belfast.
Meehan said; 'Our Advice Centre has been notified of an increase of disturbances in the Limestone Road/Alexandra Park area by local residents. Nationalist kids (some as young as 7 years-old) have been gathering for the past two weeks (after arranging trouble via Social Networking Sites) with their Unionist neighbours of a similar age. These incidents appear to have provoked older elements from Tiger's Bay into attacking Catholic homes on the Limestone Road over the past few nights'.
Meehan concluded; 'As an Irish Socialist-Republican Group, RNU is totally against anyone being targeted due to their religious background. We believe that sectarianism must be tackled. Therefore, we urge local parents to properly monitor their childrens' behaviour'.
