ASYLUM SEEKERS HOLD NATIONAL RALLY
DUBLIN - 22nd OF JUNE 2011- DAIL EIREANN - 12.30PM

Asylum seekers from all over the country held a rally to call on the justice minister and his cabinet to reform the asylum system.
The event aims to highlight the plights of people who have come here for protection. Main themes include the rights of children born in Ireland, the right to residency and to work, the closure of direct provision centres, the end to lengthy processing of applications and the end to deportations.
This initiative will be the first of its kind to be hold in Ireland, since it started from the initiative of asylum seekers themselves. Our belief is that the time has come for a complete overhaul in the asylum process. We also argue that it is important that Justice Minister Alan Shatter implements the changes he has always voted for in the immigration bill.
The participants hope that this will be an opportunity for migrants and Irish people to meet each other, exchange life experiences and challenge the stereotypes that are frequently ascribed to foreign people.
ARN will support this event. Indeed for us citizenship should follow the rule of equality, independently from each one's religion, skin colour or where he was born. "What makes a country is not where one comes from but what one does together within it and what one wants to do with it. It is the present and the future that unite, not the past". antiracismireland@gmail.com
